PS3 questions?

Post by Count Arioch the 28th »

Two quick questions:

1. Are the new 160 GB PS3's backwards compatible with both PS1 and PS2 games?

2. If the answer was no, where can I get my hands on a 60gb PS3? Gamestop has them used, and want about a hundred bucks more than what they went for when new.

1. Apparently not, which is lame.

2. No idea.

I have a vague idea how, but it'd be complicated and involve the US Postal System.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

They're only incompatible with some games.

It's a hardware issue.

No, I don't know which ones.

The old machines were incompatible with some games as well... It just happens.

However, it's been over a year since these machines you're talking about came out, and as far as I know, most of the bugs that could be ironed out have been.

List of games; the article states new PS3 is not compatible with PS2, which is untrue, but says why, which is true.

Good idea, that way you can play 18^10,000,000 Mario games, half as many Metroid games, a fair number of Kirby games, several hundred Zelda games, and a handful of gimmicks for parties.

I heard from a friend that's a pretty hardcore gamer that the PS3 does a poor job of playing older games, and tends to tear itself to pieces trying to. (Also, he said that no new PS3's are backwards compatible in any way, shape, or form. They've abandoned that feature completely.)

His recommendation is to just replace my PS2 and get the 160 gb PS3 and play PS3 games on that.

I'm going to wait for a bit, money's tight right now.

Joystiq has a handy SKU guide to the various PS3 models here, and no, none of the new ones support PS2 games at all. If you're still interested, you can get $150 off of a PS3 by opening a Sony credit line; Joystiq has a writeup on the options with relevant links here. Enjoy!

I've had no trouble playing any of my PS2 games; only DDR had trouble and it was mostly a controller error.

However, the PS3s that haven't ben released... I see they've given up on the software emulation they'd been using on the first series of no-hardware PS3s: PS3 FAQ

Brawl is godly and far beats yet another red-circle or DVD-laser error.
My girlfriend has gone through 2 unrepairable 360s in a year thanks to manufacturing mistakes. That's not encouraging me to buy one. Ever.
And after my PS2 DVD-reader-thing broke years ago, I've lost faith in Sony (but after replacing it with the new flat one for dirt cheap, and continue to play RPGs and w/e, it's not that I don't enjoy it: I'm just not replacing it again)

Never had a PS2 fail on me - one memory card, yes, and I wasn't terribly happy about that seeing as it had my Makai Kingdom New Game+ on it, but whatever.

Brawl fails to impress me. The Smash Brothers games are very button mashy and crazy, good for parties, but I don't invite people over here so that's useless. C for gameplay, I'll stick with Guilty Gear XX#Reload thank you. Beautiful, beautiful sprites. And for a party game, why the fuck do you need to play for 9,001 hours to actually unlock the very characters they pimped out on the ads? D- for character content.

I couldn't recommend a 360 though, and the only reason I recommend a PS3 now is that they finally decided they might release some good games. Maybe someone at Sony finally got the post-it note reading "Don't fail".

The problem with games for PS3 was that Microsoft paid off many studios to only make XBox games, or XBox games first. They've kept this up, though they sorta gave up on selling machines below cost. Sortof.

Bribes go alot further in the business world than you might think...

Anyhow, the older PS3s are around, but Game Stop is terrible for used machines. They don't clean them or refurb them, they just resell them at top dollar. Which isn't good.

My link has the list of PS3s, they should still be in stores, Costco (though they've been in low supply there, compared to XBoxes), etc.

Brawl is a fucking shit game. Totally overpowered characters (metaknight I am looking at you, snake is pretty bad), that don't even require high degrees of skill (just spamming tornado over and over and over requires fairly sophisticated tactics to counter) to use.

Its just not very fun as a result if you play it seriously, and if you want to play it casually....

I'd rather play rock band.
